According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), al-Qahtaniya had a population of 16,946 in the 2004 census. The majority of the population is Kurdish, but there is also a significant number of Assyrians/Syriacs. Both ethnic groups have lived there since the establishment of the city in late 1920's. At this time the counsellor or general secretary (mustašār) of the Jazire area was located in Amuda. Al-Qahtaniya's current name was adopted in 1962 as a more optimistic name than its old name (Qbor el-Bid) which means "White graves".On 13 March 2004, during the 2004 Al-Qamishli riots where 40 Kurds were killed, the population of Al-Qahtaniya protested at the funerals of the killed. Protesters were shot at and injured in the town.During the Syrian Civil War, the YPG took control over the town.The poet and author Tuma Gawriye Nahroyo (1936-2002) was from Al-Qahtaniyah.. }
