He held a variety of positions in the community throughout his life including city councillor for the Sinfin ward (1983–2002), Chair for the China Friendship Association,[citation needed] Labour Party candidate for Boulton in 2004[citation needed] and a school governor from 1976 until his retirement in October 2006.Mullarkey narrowly escaped a German bombing during World War II. He was employed at Rolls-Royce plc for 35 years, in computing, training, and eventually as a community relations manager.[citation needed] He remained a devout Roman Catholic throughout his life, including when he was mayor.[citation needed]Mullarkey died on the morning of Saturday 10 February 2007, at Derby Royal Infirmary from emphysema.[citation needed] His funeral was held on 22 February 2007, at St George's Church in Normanton.[citation needed] It was attended by family, friends, Derbyshire politicians and members from the local press.
