He was elected Vice-governor of São Paulo in 2006 with Governor José Serra. After Serra's resignation, to be able to run for the presidency of Brazil in the general elections of October 2010, Goldman became governor of São Paulo on 6 April 2010.Goldman started coursing engineering in the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo when he was 18. When the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état took place, he was a militant of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB), that was outcast by law. Soon after the AI-5, he became a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB). After the end of the MDB in the late 1970s, he became a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). He went back to PCB but ended up switching it for PMDB in 1987. From 1992-1994, he served as the Transport Minister of Itamar Franco presidency.
