He became famous for championing human rights during the late nineteenth century in an environment where fundamental human rights such as freedom of movement and the ability to choose one's employer were generally not protected rights within the colonial system. He established the first free secondary school for poor and underprivileged children in British Guiana in 1894; served as mayor of British Guiana's capital city Georgetown; and led the People's Association (founded in 1903) as well as founded and led the British Guiana Worker's League in 1931.[17] The League improved conditions for people of all ethnic backgrounds in a country where most workers were of West African, East Indian, Chinese and Portuguese descent who had been introduced to the country under a system of forced labor and indentureship-based contract labor. Barbados-born A.A. Thorne was also the first person of African descent from any British colony to earn both Masters degree and Bachelor's degree from a British University in England (graduating with honours from University of Durham, England in 1898).
