Born in Nelson, New Hampshire, he attended the public schools and graduated from Yale College in 1882 and from the Yale Law School in 1885. He was admitted to the bar in 1885 and commenced practice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and was a member of the South Dakota State Senate from 1889 to 1891. He was a member of the Republican National Committee from 1892 to 1896 and was appointed, and subsequently elected, as a Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James H. Kyle. Kittredge was reelected in 1903 and served from July 11, 1901, to March 4, 1909; he was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1908. While in the Senate, he was chairman of the Select Committee on Standards, Weights and Measures (Fifty-seventh Congress) and a member of the Committees on Patents (Fifty-eighth and Fifty-ninth Congresses) and Interoceanic Canals (Sixtieth Congress). He engaged in the practice of law at Sioux Falls until his death at Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1911; interment was in Conant Cemetery, Jaffrey, New Hampshire.. }
