Her children's story, Once the Hodja (1943), with illustrations by Frank Dobias, retold stories about the Turkish folk hero Nasreddin.Kelsey was born Alice Geer in Danvers, Massachusetts and grew up in Lewiston, Maine and West Hartford, Connecticut. She received her B.A. in history from Mount Holyoke College in 1918.
