He played for Bloxwich Strollers before joining Birmingham in April 1913 as cover at full back. He made his debut in the Second Division on 3 January 1914, deputising for Frank Womack at left back in a home game against Notts County which Birmingham won 2–1. Over the next two seasons he played five times more, in each case standing in for Womack or his full-back partner Billy Ball. Described as a solid, powerful defender who lacked pace, Stanton did not play for the club during the First World War, and returned to local football with Oldbury in 1918.. }
