Rivka Saker, Chairman of Sotheby's Israel, founded Artis in 2004. Saker established the organization as with objectives such as “extending its artist and curatorial grant programs, creating a regional event series and establishing residency opportunities for Israeli artists.” Currently, Yael Reinharz is Artis' Executive Director.Artis also provides grants biannually to artists from Israel and non-profit institutions featuring projects with Israeli artists. Previous recipients include: Yael Bartana, Ori Gersht, Dor Guez, Gilad Ratman, Naama Tsabar, Ariel Schlesinger, and the Public Movement. Through a partnership with Columbia University School of the Arts, Artis awards scholarships to Israeli art students enrolled in the MFA program; the first recipient of this grant was Guy Ben-Ner. Since its inception, Artis has put 50 students through a professional development program. Artis also organizes research trips to Israel for art professionals, writers, and curators, that provide exclusive access to Israeli artists and institutions and delve into the broader socio-political context in which cultural production is taking place.. }
