He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi in 1988 for his poetic work Sapthapadi and Karnataka Sahitya Akademi for his work Neralu. Sharma was born and educated in Bangalore. He became a psychologist and educationist and earned a Ph.D. in psychology from London University. Working for UNESCO, he lived in Ethiopia, England and Zambia before returning to India in 1982.[citation needed] His oeuvre includes eight collections of poems, four collections of short stories, four plays and two books of non-fiction.[citation needed]Sharma is one of the pioneers of the Modern movement in Kannada literature.[citation needed] Among his publications is Gestures, a collection of poems in English. He has translated one hundred English poems of his time into Kannada and both prose and poetry from Kannada into English. Besides the substantial contribution he has made to Kannada poetry, he has translated a novel by Masti, and a collection of thirteen short stories by Yashwant V.
