The ship was named after the companion of the Prophet Muhammed (Peace and blessing be upon him) and third khalifah of Islam, Umar al Khattab, called Umar Farooq (Farooq being the one who distinguishes between right and wrong). Umar Farooq is remembered by Muslims as a great man who strove for goodness in whatever he did. The ship was built in Britain, and served with the Royal Navy for 18 years, before being sold to Bangladesh, arriving there on 27 March 1977.
