Built as a freighter named Thala Dan at the end of the 1950s in Denmark, she was launched in 1957 and discharged from military service on 23 July 2002.In 1982 she was acquired by the Brazilian Navy to be adapted and take part in the Operation Antarctica (OPERANTAR 1) of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR), being one of the pioneers of Brazilian missions to Antarctica.In 2007, Barão de Teffé was reported awaiting wrecking in Rio de Janeiro.
