It is based upon the Dutch series of the same name, which gained notoriety in 1999 and 2000. The series premiered on CBS on July 10, 2002 and lasted eleven weeks until the live finale on September 25, 2002. The third season went on to match the success of the previous season, and saw an increase in ratings from Big Brother 2. The Big Brother 3 premiere garnered more than 9 million viewers, more than one million higher than the previous year. Ratings continued to increase, with the finale receiving more than 12 million viewers. Big Brother 3 has the highest rated finale of the series thus far, with more than 12 million viewers tuning in to find out the winner. It also has the fourth highest rated premiere episode for the series thus far. This season featured a total of 12 HouseGuests, the same amount as the previous season. The series ended after 82 days, in which HouseGuest Lisa Donahue was crowned the Winner, and Danielle Reyes the Runner-Up.The premise of the series remained largely unchanged from the previous edition, in which a group of contestants, known as "HouseGuests," compete to win the series by voting each other off and being the last HouseGuest remaining. One HouseGuest, known as the Head of Household, must nominate two of their fellow HouseGuests for eviction. The HouseGuests then vote to evict one of the nominees, and the HouseGuest with the most votes is evicted. When only two HouseGuests remained, the previously evicted HouseGuests would decide which of them would win the $500,000 prize. A HouseGuest can be expelled from the show for breaking rules, such as discussing nominations when not permitted. This season featured numerous twists that impacted the game. The main twist was the introduction of the Silver Power of Veto, in which the winner could take a nominee off the block. The Golden Power of Veto was also introduced this season, and would be used in all subsequent seasons. The Head of Household would then be required to select a replacement nominee. Another twist to the game was that one previously evicted HouseGuest was given a second chance to enter the house and compete to win the series.Following their appearance on the series, numerous HouseGuests made appearances in future editions. HouseGuest Marcellas Reynolds made an appearance in Big Brother 4 as part of a luxury competition. Runner-Up Danielle Reyes and Marcellas returned to the house in 2006 to compete in Big Brother: All-Stars, where they placed 6th and 9th respectively. Winner Lisa Donahue was a candidate to appear that season, but ultimately was not selected to return. HouseGuest Josh Feinberg also made an appearance that season, during a Head of Household competition. HouseGuest Amy Crews later returned to the house in 2008 to participate in a food competition during Big Brother 10. Danielle later made a brief appearance in 2009 during Big Brother 11.. }
