He was educated at Rugby School where he was in the first XI cricket for three years. He made his debut for Kent against Derbyshire in July 1877 at the age of 18. He was a regular bowler for Kent for three years taking 5 wickets in an innings eleven times, and three times taking ten wickets in a match. He played club cricket for Orleans Club, but did not appear in any of the club's first-class matches.Cunliffe was a right-handed batsman and played 44 innings in 25 first class matches with an average of 9.45 and a top score of 47.
