The album is mainly made up of members from leadman Toby Driver's former band motW. It features aspects of experimental metal, post-rock, art rock, jazz and chamber music. The lyrics were written by longtime Driver collaborator Jason Byron, and the music was written as well as produced by Driver. The album is widely considered a seminal post-metal album because of its jazz-styled improvisations, breakdowns, metal sections and unorthodox chamber style instrumentation. The songs are long, influenced by the stylings of progressive rock. SputnikMusic voted it as one of the best metal albums of the 2000s.
