He was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament (MP) for Watford at the 1918 general election, a seat he held until 1943. From 1928 to 1929 he served as Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means and from 1931 to 1943 as Chairman of Ways and Means (Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons). Appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1929, Herbert was admitted to the Privy Council in 1933 and on 1 February 1943 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Hemingford, of Watford in the County of Hertford.Lord Hemingford married Mary, daughter of Valentine Graeme Bell, in 1903. He died in December 1947, aged 78, and was succeeded in the barony by his son Dennis George Ruddock Herbert. Lady Hemingford died in 1966.. }
