He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-two when he joined the Kilkenny senior team for the 2001 championship. Lyng went on to play a key part for Kilkenny for over almost a decade, and won six All-Ireland medals, eight Leinster medals and four National Hurling League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions.As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Lyng won two Railway Cup medals. At club level he enjoyed a lengthy but largely unsuccessful career with Emeralds.Throughout his career Lyng made 32 championship appearances. His announced his retirement from inter-county hurling on 1 December 2010.In retirement from playing Lyng became involved in team management and coaching.
