Prior to that, in 2009-2011, she was Vice-President at the World Bank overseeing Middle East and North African issues. Between 2006 and 2009, she served as the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, holding the rank of Federal Minister. She was the 14th Governor of the State Bank and the first woman to assume the position. Previously, she also held positions with the Asian Development Bank. In addition, she serves as the United Nations Sherpa for the G20.She was born in the city of Hyderabad, Sindh. She is a Sindhi and hails from the village of Haji Nathar Detho in Naushahro Feroze District. Dr Akhtar completed her Ph.D in Economics from Scotland's Paisley College of Technology. She has an M.S. in Economics from Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad and an M.A. in Development Economics from the University of Sussex, England. In 1987, she attended Harvard University under the Fulbright programme.. }
