It was designed by architect Edward Bennett Dougherty (b. 1876) of the firm Dougherty & Gardner. The Beaux-Arts style building is remarkable for its massive columns and the orb-shaped designs woodwork surrounding the baptistery.The congregation was founded in August 1914, first meeting at the corner of Highland and Greenwood Avenues in the Highland Park subdivision of what is now Virginia-Highland, using the facilities of the defunct Highland Park Baptist Church there.
