Named after the suburb of the same name, it is a 19.7 km² urban electorate in Adelaide's inner northern suburbs, taking in the suburbs of Angle Park, Broadview, Clearview, Enfield, Ferryden Park, Kilburn, Mansfield Park, Regency Park, Sefton Park, Woodville Gardens, as well as parts of Blair Athol, Collinswood, Kilkenny, Nailsworth and Prospect.Enfield was first created at the March 1956 elections. It was abolished in 1970 boundary redistribution, substantially replaced by the electoral district of Ross Smith.Enfield was recreated in the 1998 electoral distribution as a safe seat for the Australian Labor Party, replacing the abolished district of Ross Smith. It was first contested at the 2002 state election, where it was won by ALP candidate John Rau, who had defeated Ralph Clarke, the former member for Ross Smith, in a party preselection ballot. Clarke subsequently contested the election as an independent, but came third, falling 800 votes short of the Liberal candidate. At the 2006 state election, Clarke decided to contest a South Australian Legislative Council seat, where he was given virtually no chance of victory. As a result, Rau extended his margin, easily retaining the seat for Labor.. }
