Cawdron and Foon have contributed to other Montreal-based groups as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Set Fire to Flames, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band, Saltland, Fifths of Seven and Mile-End Ladies' String Auxiliary. The two met in 2001 while recording the first Set Fire to Flames record in Montreal.Esmerine's music consists mainly of percussion, cello, and marimba, lacking the guitars present in other Godspeed You! Black Emperor side projects. Esmerine's style shares many characteristics with minimalist classical music and chamber music. Esmerine released two critically acclaimed albums of minimalist, expressive modern chamber music in the first half of that decade on their own Madrona Records imprint: If Only A Sweet Surrender To The Nights To Come Be True (2003) and Aurora (2005). La Lechuza (2011) and Dalmak (2013) were both released on Constellation, with each album grounded in a specific set of collaborations, greatly expanding the definition of the band's sound and styles. As part of La Lechuza, Esmerine collaborated with Patrick Watson to honor their friend Lhasa and created the site Snow Day for Lhasa (dedicated to Lhasa de Sela). Most recently, Esmerine has solidified into a core quartet, with Cawrdron and Foon joined by percussionist Jamie Thompson (The Unicorns, Islands) and multi-instrumentalist Brian Sanderson.Esmerine's latest record, Dalmak, was awarded Instrumental Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2014.. }
