He moved to West Memphis, Arkansas, in 1932 and continued the practice of law. He served in the State senate 1935–1939.Gathings was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth and to the fourteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1939 – January 3, 1969). He was not a candidate for reelection in 1968 to the Ninety-first Congress. He resumed the practice of law. He served as a member of West Memphis, Arkansas, Port Authority.Gathings resided in West Memphis, Arkansas, where he died May 2, 1979.
