He originally started his career with Manchester City, but moved on to Cardiff City in 1981, without making any first team appearances, on a free transfer where he linked up with his brother Dave.He left Cardiff for £65,000 in July 1984 to join Sunderland. Bennett went on to play 369 league games with Sunderland scoring 23 goals before joining Carlisle United 11 years later.
