His date of designation as an aviator also precedes all other aviators in the U.S. Air Force and Army."Upon his retirement he was hired for the newly-created position of "DuPont Aviation Director", and was subsequently caught up in the conspiracy and scandal surrounding the 1991 crash of a Conoco Gulfstream in Malaysia which killed a dozen executives and air crew. Petersen had gone on record as stating that a warning from other pilots months before the incident that the company's governance was dangerously slack by referring to the pilot who reported this as "...an absolute fucking kook..." There was a coverup and conspiracy after the crash to obscure the fact that a gross pilot error was committed by a sick, alcoholic pilot whom senior executives continued to tolerate. Along with other Conoco executives, Petersen was accused of taking part in a conspiracy to destroy evidence, during a company investigation at the crash site in Malaysia and afterwards.
