A cameo by veteran Gemini Ganesan happened to be his last film appearance, before his death in March 2005.The film was scheduled for release on Tamil New Year 2002, but was released two days earlier on 12 April. Despite garnering mixed critical reviews upon release, the film was highly successful and was the biggest hit of the year, its success being attributed to the popularity of the song "O Podu".
