On his death in 1894 he was succeeded in the marquessate, and his other titles, by his uncle. According to family records, he went by the name William, and was known informally as Willie. ("The Wardens of Savernake Forest", by Cardigan, 1949.)In his youth, he was a habitual gambler, forcing his grandfather to step in and pay hundreds of thousands of pounds to take care of the creditors. Upon succeeding his grandfather to the family estates, his propensity for gambling only increased, and he soon found his entire estate approaching bankruptcy. During the legal proceedings in 1891, many offers came to buy to great Savernake estates, including Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, then Chairman of the Board, and former CEO of the Guinness Company. However, the Board of Trusties of Savernake, headed by Willie's uncle, Henry Augustus Brudenell-Bruce, 5th Marquess of Ailesbury, fought hard to prevent Willie from selling. After years of legal battles and appeals, Edward Guiness, by then known as Lord Iveagh, became impatient and withdrew his offer. Not long after that, William died an untimely death, due mainly to his excessive life style, and was succeeded by his uncle, who now had the very difficult task of making the estate solvent once more. This information is pulled from Cedric Brudenell-Bruce, 7th Marquess of Ailesbury's book, The Wardens of Savernake Forest, published in 1949.. }
