He was also head of the medical technology strategic area at NTNU from 2000 to 2005.He then took a position as the deputy managing director of St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim in 2005, and became managing director in 2006.He started as the CEO of the Central Norway Regional Health Authority in Trondheim, Norway, in 2009, a post he held until he began his position as NTNU's rector in 2013.Bovim holds and has had a number of national and international board positions, including as a member of the Executive Board and Head of the Division Board for Society and Health at The Research Council of Norway, and as leader of the Norwegian Neurological Association from 1998 to 1999. He was a delegate for Norway in the European Medical Research Council from 2004 to 2007, and is a member of the Board of Higher Education Institutions (UHR), a position he took in the autumn of 2013. He is also a member of the Policy Research Working Group under the European University Association (EUA).Bovim has published a number of scientific articles and was awarded a research prize from the Norwegian Migraine Society in 1993.
