During World War I, he served on the Western Front and took part in the heavy fighting near Verdun. Later in the war he worked with the German General Staff.During World War II, Brauchitsch primarily and famously served as Commander-in-Chief of the German Army. He played a key role in the campaign against France and for his part was promoted to field marshal. He was dismissed by Hitler in 1941 following the failed Moscow offensive, and spend the rest of the war in the semi-retirement. After World War II, Brauchitsch was arrested on charges of war crimes, but died of a heart attack before he could prosecuted.
