He was in charge of civil and food supplies, a position which was the equivalent of the rank of state minister. Austin was named as India's ambassador to Portugal in 1985.Austin was visiting his daughter in Thiruvananthapuram when he began complaining of uneasiness. He died on his way to the hospital on May 15, 2008, at the age of 88. He was buried at the Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Kochi, India.. }
