The name of the city means walk-about field.It is known as the birthplace of Nestor Makhno. Prior to the annexation of the Crimean Khanate by the Russian Empire the area was mostly settled by Cossacks and the nomadic Lesser Nogai Horde. Between 1917 and 1921, reflective of the turbulence in the region brought about by the Russian Civil War (and concurrent Ukrainian War of Independence), the city changed hands no fewer than sixteen times.
