Matches in DBpedia 2014 for { ?s ?p I can't see how a particular engine's torque curve makes it any more or less "smooth"... maybe the diesel ran smoother , but it's perfectly capable of doing that with half the torque or twice as much, if well engineered. Never mind the idea that the improved fuel economy may have something to do with it . In any case, diesels produce their torque at lower rpms, but also their power, and hit the redline earlier, with taller gearing to cope with these limits, which tends to mute the at-wheel torque - modern TDis drive so well because they have a decided excess of it, rather than simply matching the petrol's crankshaft output. Plus, they're heavier. From experience, I choose to disbelieve that it's "just as fast" as the petrol, because any diesel of that era I've seen of similar BHP to a petrol model has had a slower 0-60, sometimes drastically so, and a slightly lower top speed. Do we have actual performance figures to rely on, rather than fairly meaningless HP and lb-ft?. }
