Joseph was born a member of Moosomin First Nation. He moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at an early age and was raised primarily by his single mother. Joseph faced many of the same adversities as many Aboriginal youth; particularly exposure to violence, drugs, alcohol. He speaks English, French and Cree. As a child he attended pow wows, joining in and singing with the older drum groups. His hunger to perform, and love for the spotlight was a clear foreshadow of his future endeavors. By seventeen, Stylez set himself apart from his family and friends at an early age and fought for music, his only passion. In his early music career themes of poverty and oppression played a major role. His latest project, "Feather + Rosary", reflects the duality of darkness and light he carries inside of him, an embracing of his past and a sobering look at his future. This project also reflects his desire to use music to rise from the darkness and to do good in life. He currently stands as one of the most important First Nations figures in the First Nations hip hop scene in Western Canada, commonly referred to as "Chief" by his friends, family and fans. He is looked up to by First Nations across North America, young and old. A majority of his fans reside on American reserves across the United States. Stylez was once iconized by his at-times outlandish fashions. Today, Stylez is known world-wide for his style, fashion, taste making abilities, and his trademark red "infinity" symbol tattooed to his neck, proudly symbolic of his Metis heritage. Stylez was the first to bring mainstream attention to Native Americans. His debut album The Blackstar was released on November 23, 2009. The Blackstar was a great success earning Stylez a Juno Nomination and three APCMA awards, including Best Music Video for his song "Sugarcane" (2009), Best Pop Album (2010) and Songwriter of the Year (2010). Stylez has since earned many other notable awards and achievements, including top 25 Canadian rap artists of all time. Justin Trudeau, son of the famous Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, sought a private audience with Stylez after the release of "Living Proof" (2008), a song about residential schools. "Feather and Rosary" was released on May 23, 2013. The album is meant to represent his growth as an artist and an individual. It is an exploration of his past and the direction he wants to take toward his future. Stylez is famously known to be vegan, sober and an advocate of healthy active living. He constantly takes care of his friends and family around him and encourages them to succeed in whatever dreams they wish to pursue in life.[citation needed]. }
