While there he joined Athlone Town as a 19-year-old and, playing as sweeper, helped the reserve team win the old ‘B’ division title. It was also with Athlone that he made what he calls his "three-minute" League of Ireland debut, coming off the bench for the senior team in a game against Home Farm on 27 October 1985.He moved to Cork to take up a job in 1985. The following year he signed for Cork City from Munster Senior League side Wembley and made his debut in the League Cup against Kilkenny City. Over the next 15 seasons he made a club record number of appearances (455) and is the club's joint all time top scorer with 129 goals.Caulfield took over as manager of Cork City on 5 November 2014.At the end of the 2013 League of Ireland season he is joint 20th highest goalscorer in the history of the League and was top scorer in the 1991/92 and 1994/1995 seasons.He is also Cork City's joint record goalscorer of all time.. }
