He was in private practice in Chicago, Illinois from 1870 to 1895. On February 25, 1895, Showalter was nominated by President Grover Cleveland to a new seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit created by 28 Stat. 643. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 1, 1895, and received his commission the same day. Showalter served in that capacity until his death, in 1898, in Chicago.. }
