The party was founded after the film director Ken Loach appealed for a new party of the left, with the eventual aim of replacing the Labour Party as the mass party of the working class, as he claimed that the Labour Party had failed to oppose austerity. More than 10,000 people signed up to Loach's initial appeal, and as of November 2013, around 1,000 members had joined the party. Salman Shaheen, a member of the party’s national committee, stated that one of the effects could be to encourage the Labour Party to move leftwards, in the same way that he believed the growth of the UK Independence Party had encouraged the Conservative Party to move to the right. Left Unity held its formal Founding Conference in London on 30 November 2013. At this time it had 1,200 subs-paying members.
