He was assigned to 29 Squadron to pilot a Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5a in June 1918. On 12 August, he began his victory roll by destroying a German Pfalz D.III fighter over Ploegsteert, Belgium. After destroying two reconnaissance planes and driving another down out of control, Wareing became both an ace and a balloon buster by ruining an observation balloon on 7 September 1918. He burned a Fokker D.VII and destroyed three more balloons, two of those being his last triumphs on two separate sorties on 29 September.
