McPharlin was educated at Christ Church Grammar School, graduating in 1999. McPharlin is both a key back and a key forward.He now spends the majority of playing time in the back line, but has spent time at full-forward. He is also well known for his trademark "specky's" or high flying pack-marks.McPharlin was recruited from East Fremantle in Western Australia to the Hawthorn Football Club after being taken at Pick 10 in the 1999 AFL Draft. He made his debut in 2000 and played 12 games in his first two seasons at Hawthorn before being traded to Fremantle.
