Deformed from early childhood, by the age of 12 she resolved to adopt the life of an anchoress and was established near St. Alban’s Church. There she spent her days and years in total renunciation of the world in order to give honor to God. She was a contemporary of the famous mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg but it is not known if they ever met. Eventually she made the acquaintance of a Dominican priest named John, who became her spiritual advisor. John tried to get her to follow popular ascetic practices such as fasting and sleep deprivation, but realized that interior asceticism was more suited to her. In a mistaken belief that he was “helping” her renunciation, he refused to see her or hear her confession for long periods of time. He came to regret this decision, but Margaret believed that in these periods she was under the tutelage of Christ and the Virgin Mary. As an anchoress many people sought her out for advice. John came to see her as a saint and recorded some of her spiritual teachings and practices in a hagiography that is the source of most of our information about her.She died some time after 1245.. }
