It was the band's first album released through Lookout! Records. The album marked a very distinct stylistic shift. Following a brief breakup, the band reunited and made a conscious decision to pursue a more pop-based sound, rather than the faster, more aggressive songs found on their prior albums like Boogadaboogadaboogada!. Along with the shift in sound, main songwriter Ben Weasel began collaborating more with guitarist (and former bassist) Dan Vapid. Weasel has been quoted as saying that Vapid is the only person he ever felt truly comfortable writing songs with. For My Brain Hurts, the band's popularity skyrocketed within the punk community. It remains one of their best-selling releases and is considered one of their best albums by fans. The surge in popularity would unfortunately provide a source of pressure on the band when they recorded the follow-up album, Wiggle. After being out of print for a short time, the album was remastered and re-released on CD by Asian Man Records. A vinyl version was reissued by Recess Records in 2009. The whole album was covered in December of 2008 by Jon Cougar Concentration Camp as a tribute. The back cover lists Al Sobrante as executive producer. Al Sobrante is the alias of John Kiffmeyer, original drummer of Green Day, who were also on Lookout! Records at the time. The original Lookout! release included a single 12" x 12" lyric sheet, while the label claimed "45 RsPerM" even though it was an 33rpm LP.. }
