Samorodina made her official debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where she competed in the women's 200 m butterfly. She finished third in the first heat, and twenty-seventh overall, by approximately one second behind Slovenia's Anja Klinar, with a time of 2:17.15.Shortly before her next Olympics, Samorodina retired from the pool, and thereby competed as an open water swimmer. She qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, after placing fourth in the 10km Marathon Swimming Olympic test event at Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park. Samorodina swam in the first-ever women's 10 km open water marathon, against a field of 24 other competitors, including South African amputee swimmer Natalie du Toit, British duo Keri-Anne Payne and Cassandra Patten, and sixteen-year old American Chloe Sutton. Samorodina finished the race in twenty-third place, with a total time of 2:10:41.6, eleven minutes and thirteen seconds (11:13) behind winner Larisa Ilchenko of Russia.. }
