He played hurling with his local club St. Vincent's and with the Dublin senior inter-county team in the 1950s and 1960s. He later served as manager of the Limerick senior inter-county team on two occasions in the 1970s and 1980s. Drumgoole is regarded as one of the greatest players never to have won an All-Ireland medal.Noel is the last player to have captained a Dublin side to a Leinster title and in 1984, he was named on the Centenary Team of players who hadn’t won All-Ireland honours.In 1968, Noel founded the Na Piarsaigh GAA Club on the north side of Limerick city.
