The page, run by two college age males identifying themselves as "Alan and Rob," initially began as a collection of reviews of movies traditionally considered to be "bad" (i.e. poor production values, poor acting, badly conceived scripts, etc.) but were not as well known as such "seminal" bad films as Plan Nine from Outer Space. As the page's popularity grew through word of mouth and advertising, its content expanded to include polls, a message board, contests, and eventually, user-submitted reviews and even conventions. The page rose to prominence and gained mainstream popularity after USA Today ran a feature article on it in the June 17, 1998 edition of their entertainment section; a quote from the article--"This way-strange site comes to the rescue with the worst movies on Earth."—frequently appeared on the front page of the site from then on. The popularity of ohthehumanity.com coincided with a rise in both the numbers and popularity of similar "bad movie review" webpages, sparking a minor internet trend; around 1998, ohthehumanity began partnering with five of these sites, B-Notes Jabootu's Bad Movie Dimension, And You Call Yourself A Scientist!, The Bad Movie Report, Badmovies.org, and The B-Movie Mailing List, to begin a cross-promotional feature in which reviews from each site would be linked to on the other five pages.Ohthehumanity inexplicably shut down sometime in mid-2000, with updates ceasing sometime between May and October of that year. Despite the page no longer being updated, it remained online until 2006; in the interim, no notices were given on the page explaining the lack or cessation of updates.On March 10, 1998, ohthehumanity was acquired by IGN, and remained a part of that webpage until its eventual disbanding. No mention of the page exists on any of ign's pages.. }
