In the 2000 election run, he ran for Congress as a Republican.Ahumada was arrested for DWI by Brownsville police back in May 2010. According to the special prosecutor, Willacy County District Attorney Bernard Ammerman, Ahumada did not agree to taking a breathalyzer test resulting in a driver's license suspension until July 7, 2012. Ammerman came out and stated that there were two eye witnesses who independently confirmed that Ahumada had only consumed about two alcoholic drinks that night.
