He was the first ever Icelandic to play in National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a 2.18 m (7'2"), 118 kg (260 lb) center and played college basketball at the University of Washington, in Seattle, United States.Gudmundsson was selected in the third round of the 1981 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, for whom he played during the 1981-82 season. In August 1983 the Blazers traded him to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for a 1984 third-round draft pick. He played with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1985-86 but was traded to the San Antonio Spurs along with Frank Brickowski, two draft picks and an undisclosed amount of money in exchange for Mychal Thompson.In 1986, Gudmundsson was set to play for the American CBA's Kansas City Sizzlers but was denied a work permit by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.He also coached Icelandic basketball team Valur/Fjolnir.. }
