From baptismal records he appears to be the son of William and Mary Williams of Talgarth, Breconshire, Wales and was baptised on 29 June 1725 in the non-conformist chapel of Tredustan, near Talgarth. William Williams was connected to the non-conformist Vavasor Griffiths’s Academy which operated from 1735 to 1741. In 1736 or 1737 Griffiths moved his home to Chancefield near Talgarth; he retaining his pastorate, and was teaching at the Carmarthen Academy, Llwyn-llwyd as well as at Chancefield. At this time the Welsh Methodist revival influenced the older nonconformist churches, or dissenters — the Baptists and the Congregationalists — who in turn also experienced growth and renewal. As a result, by the middle of the nineteenth century, Wales was a predominantly a nonconformist country.. }
