When Beeckman was five years old, his family moved to Providence, Rhode Island. He left school at the age of sixteen and later raised in business.Beeckman became a Rhode Island state Representative in 1902. He held that position until 1912. He became a state Senator from 1912 to 1914. He was elected the governor of Rhode Island in 1914. He held the governor's office from January 5, 1915 to January 4, 1921. During his administration, he established a state Parole Board. He was the governor during the First World War. He visited Rhode Island troops on the battlefield in France and also helped to mobilize state resources.
