In 1922, while she was carrying passengers and freight bound for Wyndham, a fire started in the 300 tons of coal she had aboard. The tug SS Wyola was despatched from Fremantle to assist Kwinana. After putting out the fire the crew were taken back to Fremantle on Wyola. A month later a new crew was sent out to bring Kwinana back to Fremantle. After being pumped dry she returned to Fremantle under her own steam, escorted by Kurnalpi. Kwinana was then sold and taken to anchorage in Careening Bay on Garden Island, Western Australia. During a storm in 1922 Kwinana broke her moorings and drifted across Cockburn Sound before washing up on the beach that now bears her name, Kwinana Beach, near Rockingham. Kwinana jetty was later built on top of the remaining wreck after the ship was cut down from its hulk. The distinctive shape of the ship's hull is visible from aerial photographs.. }
