He joined the Gambian civil service in 1977. He later became an advisor to the United Nations and worked as a director at the African Development Bank from 1992 until 2002. He became foreign minister of the Gambia on 14 October 2004 and served in that position until 24 March 2005 when he moved to the position of minister of industry, trade and employment during a cabinet reshuffle.
