He was appointed to a Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford in 1886. He was called to the bar and practised as a barrister; he was appointed a King's Counsel in 1906. In 1923, he was appointed as a judge of the King's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice, and was knighted in 1924. He retired in 1937 and was made a member of the Privy Council. He was elected to an honorary Studentship (i.e. honorary Fellowship) of Christ Church, Oxford in 1935.
