Famous parents of past pupils include: Chris de Burgh, Phil Coulter and Colin Montgomerie. The school has also been responsible for educating members of the Spanish royal family. Alumni of St. Gerard's typically refer to themselves as "Gerardians"[citation needed] From a cultural perspective, the school views itself as a community with students from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures and religions united by a common aim – the formation of young adults able to participate fully in the academic, social, cultural and economic life of the greater community.As a school with a strong Catholic school the staff as Gt.Gerards accompany students on their spiritual journey and emphasize charity, honesty, integrity and reflection.The school is also noted for its sporting achievements and the school song "Our Shining Alma Mater" is often performed by students at sporting events. The lyrics of the song where composed by distinguished Irish songwriter Phil Coulter, whose six children attended the school. The main school games are rugby and hockey. Depending on the school term, St. Gerard’s may provide tennis, athletics archery, fencing, basketball, soccer, cross-country, badminton, golf and softball. Students are encouraged to enter local and national competitions in Science, Business Studies, Irish, Home Economics and Economics, English and many others. Other activities include debating, public speaking, choir, educational trips, equestrian events, sailing, the annual musical, charity fund-raising and visits from distinguished speakers in various subjects and in careers.. }
