Settled in the 1930s by Assyrian refugees fleeing the Simele Massacre in Iraq, by the 1960s the village had grown into a town. Tel Tamar is home to Assyrians, Arabs and Kurds however Assyrians remain a majority in the town and reside in the original part of the town. Many Assyrians from the town mainly emigrated to the United States and Canada. In 1994, it had a population of 5,216. Its inhabitants are predominantly Assyrians from the Upper Tyari tribe. Tel Tamer also is the birthplace of famous Assyrian singer Juliana Jendo.. }
